A new licence for Brent landlords has been branded a stealth tax.
A change of rules that came into effect on Jan 1st meaning almost all landlords and letting agents in Brent now need a license to rent out property, failure to get a licence could lead to prosecution and a fine of £20,000.
Brent council claim this is to ‘raise standards’ in the private housing sector but more than one landlord has complained that it’s a ‘stealth tax’ on decent landlords and that rogue landlords will just avoid the scheme and continue operating without a licence.
The landlord said “if this really was about improving standards i wouldn’t mind but to be asked to pay over £500 a year for a licence is just ridiculous, if you ask me it’s another stealth tax being brought in and is targeting the decent landlords who have all ready signed up for voluntary schemes”
