Every year an estimated 2 million tonnes of WEEE items are discarded by householders and companies in the UK. According to a recent UN university report this has contributed to a potenial urban mine of 41.8 million tonnes of WEEE waste that could be worth £35 billion.
This includes :-
- 16,000 Kilo Tonnes of iron
- 19,000 Kilo Tonnes of copper
- 300 Tonnes of precious metals including gold and palladium
David Malone, rector of the UN university said far more should be done to capture E-waste and “mine” the valuable resources used to make our electrical equipment.
It’s not all good news though as alongside this is also a toxic stockpile of liquids, chemicals and dangerous metals that also go into our everyday electrics.
